Helping Teachers Teach

Amy Huskins, Branch Manager of the Roan Mountain Branch of Northeast Community Credit Union presents the Helping Teachers Teach grant check to Mike Hill, volunteer art teacher at Cloudland Elementary School.

The full-time art educator position at Cloudland Elementary was cut in 2013 due to the school systems budget. Mike Hill has been volunteering in that position to provide fine art instruction to 250+ students. Through this art program, the students at Cloudland Elementary are encouraged to improve their art skills as they engage in the learning process, and developing critical thinking skills and a positive self-image.

With the grant from Northeast Community Credit Union, Mike Hill will be able to fix a Kiln that was donated to the school last year. He will purchase materials to fix the machine and the students will then be able to create three dimensional art pieces.

Northeast Community Credit Union awards $300.00 every month to a classroom to be utilized for classroom needs, activities, and academic enrichment.  Helping Teachers Teach is open to teachers within Carter, Johnson, Unicoi, Sullivan and Washington counties that are members of Northeast Community Credit Union.  Teachers may download the application at the credit union’s website:  www.BeMyCU.org.

NCCU Partners with Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter

Kathy Campbell, President/CEO of Northeast Community Credit Union presents a check for $500 to April Jones, Director of the Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter. The donated funds will purchase a Microchip Scanner and Laminator for the Animal Shelter.

A recent form of technology has helped to protect pets from becoming lost or separated from their owners. Microchips are now being inserted underneath your pet’s skins that holds pertinent information such as, a registration number and phone number that will be traced back to the owners of the pet. The Microchip Scanner will read the chip under the skin and help the Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter to find the owners of lost or separated animals in a fast, efficient manner.

Not only is Northeast Community Credit Union providing the Animal Shelter with the funds for the Microchip Scanner, they have launched a campaign to help the Animal Shelter obtain needed items to maintain the shelter. Items such as animal food, toys, veterinary supplies, office supplies and cleaning supplies can be purchased when you go to the store. Northeast Community Credit Union’s four branches serve as a drop-off location for all the needed items.

Kathy Campbell, President/CEO of Northeast Community Credit Union states “we are honored to provide the Microchip Scanner for the Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter, and we encourage all our members and staff to support the Animal Shelter, by donating the items needed.”
